GC5RD0B 15 let - Slavnostní snídaně s několika Q

Wednesday, May 3rd, 2000.

Dave Ulmer, a computer consultant, leaves his computer and starts his car. There is a five gallon black plastic bucket in his trunk. It's not empty, a variety of things rattles under the lid - map software CD, several books and movies, some food, small ammount of money and a slingshot.

Dave drives South Redland Road some 20 miles southest of Portland, OR. The weather is... well, an April one. Rather cloudy, then a little rain and suddenly the Sun shines for a while. Then overcast again. Nearby South Mattoon Rd. junction Dave leaves the main road and heads to the hills. He passes by a barn and after a moment the car climbs up South Fellows Rd. winding through the woods. He goes slowly, looking around. He's looking for a spot near the road, easily accessible, but sparsely visited. Just after a mile it looks like he has found the place. Dave gets out the car taking the bucket, portable spade and some other stuff. He buttons up his jacket, it's near realy hot at 50°F. Then explores the surrounding, loking around again. Then digs his spade into the soil. He digs a shallow pit, puts the bucket inside letting the top few inches above the ground, carefully pushes the dirt around it and cleans the spot. And now it comes:

He pulls out a not big device with several buttons and small screen, puts it close to the bucket and waits a while. Then takes out his notebook and writes down: N 45°17.460 W 122°24.800.

Geographic coordinates of the bucket. Coordinates specifying its precise position on the mathematical model of our planet, WGS84 ellipsoid - not even 24 hours ago the operators of army's GPS system switched off the artificial inaccuracy and now anybody on the earth can find out their location with precision of several yards.

The first cache has just been hidden. Geocaching has been born!
